Course details

Electrical engineering, Astrophysics. Biochemistry, Aeronautics, Geology are the five main subjects to be studied to be an astronaut

It takes more than school to gain a foothold as an astronaut selection candidate, however. NASA wants at least three years of "related, progressively responsible, professional experience" or (in a nod to military candidates) at least 1,000 hours of "pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.

Personal Skills

NASA has strict requirements for being an astronaut. The job not only needs you in top physical shape, but it also demands the technical skills to take on difficult jobs in a spacecraft or on a space station far from home.

Job opportunities

There are various roles that an astronaut may serve as as a part of the spacecraft?s crew, ranging from a mission specialist to a commander. The more experience and background that an astronaut has, the more responsibilities that astronaut may have. Not only are astronauts responsible for fulfilling the terms, or purpose, of their mission, but they are also responsible for ensuring safety of the spacecraft and the crew

Astronaut courses are offered at the following institutions

IIST (Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology), Thiruvananthapuram.

IIT (Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur, Bombay)

Bennett University, Greater Noida.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Sastra University, Thanjavur.

So it's tough to become an astronaut. But the good news is that there are several fascinating subjects you can study which can help you, quite literally, reach for the stars!
