Who Is A Chief Executive?
The chief executive officer (CEO), or just chief executive (CE), is the most senior corporate, executive, or administrative officer in charge of managing an organization especially an independent legal entity such as a company or non-profit institution. CEOs lead a range of organizations, including public and private corporations, non-profit organizations and even some government organizations which are notably Crown corporations. CEOs typically deal only with very high-level strategic decisions and those that direct the company's overall growth. In smaller companies, CEOs often are more hands-on and involved with day-to-day functions. CEOs can set the tone, vision, and sometimes the culture of their organizations.
What Do They Do?
The CEO of a corporation or company typically reports to the board of directors and is charged with maximizing the value of the entity, which may include maximizing the share price, market share, revenues or another element. In the non-profit and government sector, CEOs typically aim at achieving outcomes related to the organization's mission, such as reducing poverty, increasing literacy, etc. As a leader of the company, the CEO advises the board of directors, motivates employees, and drives change within the organization. As a manager, the CEO presides over the organization's day-to-day operations. The term refers to the person who makes all the key decisions regarding the company, which includes all sectors and fields of the business, including operations, marketing, business development, finance, human resources, etc. The CEO of a company is not necessarily the owner of the company.
If wondering what degree you need to be a CEO, chief executive officer education typically entails earning at least a bachelor's degree. Usually, this degree is in a field related to business and leadership, such as business administration, management, or public administration. Bachelor's degrees in business management usually take 4 years to complete, but some accelerated programs are available. Most CEO positions require 5 years or more of related work experience. Chief executive officers need extensive managerial experience, which professionals typically gain by working their way up through their organization or in positions with other businesses.
Skills of Chief Executive
- Interpersonal skills: CEOs need to form good relationships with other leaders in the company and get significant input from an organization so that there is little pushback regarding strategic decisions and direction.
- Analytical skills: CEOs must participate in evaluating the success of the organization in reaching its goals. They must make sure that each strategic goal is measurable.
- Leadership skills: CEOs must demonstrate the leadership necessary to make the organization's mission a success. This includes providing vision direction, attracting followers, and all other aspects of successful leadership.
- Management skills: The CEO is responsible for creating a culture of learning to help enhance and grow the skills and abilities of employees. Only if the significant players continue to learn and grow will the organization truly succeed?
CEOs usually need extensive experience in management, usually with a progressive amount of responsibility with each new position. In addition, companies often expect CEOs to have experience in the industry that the company is in. This position is depend upon the skills and experience of an individual.
