SCIENCE IS A BEAUTIFUL GIFT TO HUMANITY, WE SHOULD NOT DISTORT IT.
? A.P.J ABDUL KALAM

Science is nothing but an organized way of answering our curiosity. It gives us absolute control to create and solve global crisis. Thus every profession in the field is noble and of high moral regard. Biochemistry is one such branch of science that has been developing rapidly. Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to the study of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. It emerged as a distinct discipline around the beginning of the 20th century when scientists combined chemistry, physiology, and biology to investigate the chemistry of living systems.

WHAT IS BIOCHEMISTRY?

Biochemistry, sometimes called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms biochemical processes that give rise to the complexity of life.

A sub-discipline of both biology and chemistry, biochemistry can be divided into three fields; molecular genetics, protein science, and metabolism. Over the last decades of the 20th century, biochemistry has through these three disciplines become successful at explaining living processes. Almost all areas of the life sciences are being uncovered and developed by biochemical methodology and research. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology focus on understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells and between cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of tissues, organs, and organism structure and function.

Biochemistry is closely related to molecular biology, the study of the molecular mechanisms of biological phenomena.

PROFESSIONAL OPTIONS IN BIOCHEMISTRY.

The work field within the Biochemistry is broad. Jobs directly related to a Biochemistry degree include:

? Analytical chemist

? Biomedical scientist

? Healthcare scientist, clinical biochemistry

? Clinical research associate

? Forensic scientist

? Research scientist (Life Science)

? Scientific laboratory technician

? Toxicologist

Work experience with Biochemistry jobs

During your studies, you?ve developed practical and technical skills through laboratory-based work and the final year research project. This all to prepare you for research or a technical position. After graduating you can improve your chances by obtaining some relevant work experience, for example an internship, in a research laboratory or company.

Some universities provide a four-year undergraduate course that already includes an industry/research placement year, usually undertaken in the Pharmaceutical or Biotechnical industry or a research institute. Work placements help to further develop the key skills and provide opportunities for building contacts and networking.

Whatever your career plans are (or even if you don't have any yet), it is important to enhance your degree with extra skills and experiences which show that you are a proactive person engaging with the world around you.

DEGREE AND QUALIFICATION N BIOCHEMISTRY.

Science stream students fresh out of 10+2 with a minimum 50% marks can opt for a B.Sc. in Biochemistry. At the Master's level, B.Sc. degree holders can go for an M.Sc in Biochemistry and M.B.B.S degree holders for an MD in the same.
