Yoga, an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India, has now become a household word across the world. This can be singly handled, attributed to the efforts made by our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who has been strongly advocating the entire country to move towards a healthier lifestyle by practising Yoga.
While talking about the benefits of practising Yoga on a regulalr basis PM Narendra Modi highlights how medicines and other forms of allopathy are not the only available routes to address the increasing incidence of health issues that are plaguing the citizens of the country. He highlighted that it is the poor who suffer the most from illnesses and yoga will help them address this problem as yoga has proven to be beneficial especially to persons who suffer from heart ailments.
In addition to the health aspect, Narendra Modi has been strongly advocating for the adoption of yoga as a lifestyle practice because it fosters mental as well as physical discipline in individuals. It is beyond any religion or faith and is a way of life that ought to be practiced for health. While pushing citizens of the country to adopt yoga as a lifestyle practice, Narendra Modi has also strongly advocated for this cause worldwide before the United Nations General Assembly. As a result of his statements, the members of the United Nations, in a record 175 members advocating for this cause, declared on June 21st as International Yoga Day. In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help people who have insufficient physical inactivity. This reduced physical activity is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.
Most recently, Narendra Modi led a group of 40,000 individuals at the Prabhat Tara Ground on the 5th International Yoga Day, encouraging young people to practice yoga in an attempt to stay protected from hearth ailments.
