What is an Eco-home?

An Eco-house is an environmentally low-impact home designed and built using organic materials and energy-efficient technology that reduces carbon footprint.

An eco-house includes some or all of the following technologies:

Thermal insulation: This helps in keeping the house naturally cooler by disallowing heat exchange between two surfaces. Common insulators are cellulose, fiberglass and mineral wool

Good levels of daylight: Skylights, use of light and cool organic wall colors, using glossy tiles and floorings

Solar or Windmill energy: Solar panels produce electricity that is a renewable source of unlimited energy. This can run all electrical equipment like water heater, fans, water pump, washing machine, etc.

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery: An MVHR brings heat from an external source and pumps air in the house. It helps the internal moist air to escape with its heat and promotes external cool air to enter.

Rainwater harvesting: Water tanks that gather rainwater from all open spaces in the house through pipes. This can be used for drinking and cooking.

Greywater collection: Water that gets used for washing or bathing can be reused as per their hygiene levels for cleaning or gardening purposes. Soapy water that is relatively clean can be used for car-wash or cleaning lobby. Flushed water can be treated for biomass.

Organic farming: Seeds of fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. can be used for farming the crop again in the backyard. This will slowly help the house owner to grow up to 90% of their eatables in their backyard!

Benefits of Eco-house:

An Eco-house intends to create the least carbon footprint and live in harmony with the environment. It aims at defending the least on any non-biodegradable material. Eco-houses are highly cost-effective and help save a lot of energy for our future generations thus helping us lead a sustainable life. Some theorists state that Eco-houses should be made a mandatory restriction by the government. Any lifestyle that brings you close to nature has the least amount of disadvantages. The only challenge here is to be able to get accustomed to this way of life which is difficult for most people.

Indian Eco-houses:

1. Homebelaku

2. Kachra Mane

3. Laughing Waters

4. Home Mane

5. Chockalingam Muthiah?s House

6. Singh House

These homes are made of most of the above eco-friendly technologies.
