WHAT IS FASHION DESIGNING?

Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories such as bracelets and necklaces. Because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, designers must at times anticipate changes to consumer tastes.

Designers conduct research on fashion trends and interpret them for their audience. Their specific designs are used by manufacturers. This is the essence of a designer?s role; however, there is variation within this that is determined by the buying and merchandising approach, and product quality; for example, budget retailers will use inexpensive fabrics to interpret trends, but high-end retailers will ensure that the best available fabrics are used.

Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn, and they work within a wide range of materials, colors, patterns and styles.

WHO IS A FASHION DESIGNER?

Fashion Designers sketch out, create, and merchandise clothing items and accessories, such as jewellery and handbags. They are the ones who establish what?s in and what?s out, both setting the current trends and creating timeless designs. Since their imagination knows no limits, Fashion Designers may explore different areas of fashion to widen or sharpen their artistic vision, to improve their overall work and skills, or to expand their clothing or accessory selection.

Fashion Designers share their beautiful creations with the public by creating seasonal lookbooks and coordinating runway shows. Some may also take advantage of social media, television channels, and other popular means of communication to develop and increase their brand?s reputation and gain exposure.

Educational Requirements

Fashion designers are generally required to hold an undergraduate degree in fashion design. Those who intend on owning their own design firms or shops may benefit from earning a combined degree in fashion design and marketing or another business-related subject. Aspiring fashion designers seeking degree programs may consult with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the nationally recognized accrediting organization for design schools.

Curriculum

Associate's degree programs in fashion design are 2-year programs that equip students with fundamental, technical design skills, such as tailoring, sewing and basic fashion theories. Bachelor's degree programs generally last four years and tend to offer more extensive career training, combining technical coursework with artistic and conceptual instruction. Courses may include fashion drawing, 3-D design, color theory, textiles, computer-aided design, fashion business and portfolio presentation.

Internship

Hands-on training and industry exposure are essential for obtaining employment in fashion design. Aspiring fashion designers may gain such experience through internship programs, which are often required for graduation from bachelor's degree programs. Internships are available at design firms and retail businesses, and interns may be compensated for their work or provided with college credit. These programs allow interns to apply their fashion knowledge and skills and contribute to the company's design efforts under the guidance of experienced designers and executives.
