A team of international geologists have discovered a new mineral named nataliyamalikite. Joël Brugger, a professor from Monash University, is said to be the lead geologist in the team. The mineral was found from the far east of Russia and the discovery is said to be a revolutionary step in the mining industry. It can change the entire fate of the mining sector.
THE NEW MINERAL
Nataliyamalikite is a new mineral which is newly discovered and wasn’t available before. The discovery of the new mineral is documented in a study published in American Mineralogist. The mineral is named to honour Dr Natalia Malik, who is a researcher at Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in Russian Academy of Sciences, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka Peninsula. She was the first one to observe the mineral by using the electron microscope.
The heads of the International Mineralogical Association gave its approval for the nomenclature of the mineral. Joël Brugger, the lead author of the paper, claims that the new mineral is instrumental in providing an insight into the mysterious processes that result in the geochemical evolution of the planet Earth.
He even said that nataliyamalikite’s discovery is another step in understanding the process of extraction of metals from the deep and hidden sources in planet Earth. The economic ore deposits that are formed due to the concentration of minerals at small levels.
Nataliyamalikite is formed in the cracks found on the slopes of volcanoes which serve as an escape point for 620 to 6400C hot gases. This new mineral was found in the Kamchatka’s Avacha volcano in the form of nanocrystals.
Monash Centre for Electronic Microscopy facility provided for facilities that were instrumental in obtaining the crystal structure of Nataliyamalikite. The new mineral’s grains are extremely tiny which made it really difficult for the researchers to find out more about the mineral. It is extremely important to understand the crystal structure of the mineral since it leads to deriving the complete genome of the discovered mineral.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A new mineral named Nataliyamalikite is found which is like an orthorhombic form of the thallium iodide. Thallium is already a rare heavy metal which has properties of a poison. Nataliyamalikite was found in Kamchatka Peninsula. Kamchatka Peninsula is amongst the most active volcanic zones all over the world which consists of 29 active volcanoes from amongst 160 volcanoes.
