Leviathan is another name for whale. There is an incidence of massive death of endangered whales in Canada. This is a major cause of concern for the marine biologists. North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is amongst the most endangered species of whales known.
Out of 450, 13 whales have died in 2017 itself in the Gulf of St. Lawrence which falls on the eastern coast of Canada. 41 whales have died on the coast of Atlantic that stretches from North Carolina to Maine. Whale biologist, Moira Brown from New England Aquarium in Boston states that numerous deaths of whales are alarming and if it continues at this pace, the population would soon be extinct.
WHAT CAUSES THEIR DEATH?
It is a rising cause of concern for the researchers who want to know the reason for the death of whales. Researchers are trying to find the causes of their death. The findings show that three whales died after getting hit by a ship and one died because of a fishing gear.
The officials are trying their best to make arrangements for the safety of whales. Fishing and shipping have been restricted under supervision till the time whales migrate to the south. There are occasional flights assigned to check for the whales which are caught in the ropes.
Climatic change is also deemed to a reason behind their death. The change is climate is too fast for the whales to cope up. With the change in climate, there is a rise in sea level, change in temperature of the sea, a decrease in a number of food sources, acidification of water etc. The whales are losing their habitat owing to change in climate.
MIGRATION TOWARDS NORTH AND PROTECTION
The research shows that the whales seem to be migrating towards the north which puts them in danger. Leviathans are not accustomed to moving north, which is full of dangerous warm water. Scientists believe that the migration to the north might be because of the search for food.
Ever since 1949, North Atlantic Right Whale has been under the international legal protection act so that they can breed, feed and live without danger. The deaths caused by ship strikes have been prevented by employing signs that warn ships about the presence of whales nearby. Even the shipping lanes have been shifted away from their habitats.
But presently, there is an alarming rise in the death rate of whales. There is even a decrease in birth rate. The whales have been migrating to further north which is puzzling to the scientists. They can’t seem to understand whether it is because of the search for food or because of the climatic change.
