WHAT IS A HUMAN BODY TISSUE?

When we think about the composition of our body, we generally can think only till cells. However, we are composed of the several different types of human body tissue. Let us take it this way. Tissue is the building block of an organism. Organs are made up of two or more type of tissues.

Human body tissue is just another manner for describing how our cells are grouped together in a highly organized manner with set reference to the specific structure and function. The specific grouping of cells results in the formation of tissues which then make up for the different organs and the various parts of our body. For example, muscle is a type of human body tissue and muscle is something we can feel and see.

TYPES OF HUMAN BODY TISSUE

  • Muscle tissue

Muscle tissue is made up of the long and fibrous excitable cells. Muscle tissue is important to keep the body upright and allowing it to move, even going as far as pumping the blood and pushing the food through the digestive tract. These are also known as muscle fibers containing proteins actin and myosin which makes them contract. They are of three types- cardiac muscle, smooth muscle and skeletal muscle. Like a pile of rubber bands, these can stretch easily.

  • Epithelial tissue

The epithelial tissue contains tightly packed sheets of cells that are used for covering the surfaces (including the outside of our body) and the line body cavities. For example, the outer layer of human skin is an example of epithelial tissue and another example is the lining of our small intestine.

Like a blanket, epithelial tissues are tightly stitched together and hence they make up for an excellent cover for the body in the form of skin. The epithelial cells can be flat, cuboidal or columnar. They are polarized hence they have a top and a bottom. These act as barriers for the movement of fluids and also harmful microbes.

  • Connective tissue

Connective tissue helps in making a connective web inside our bodies. These hold our body parts together by providing support. These fill up the spaces inside our body with fibre matrix within a solid, liquid or jelly-like substance. Example, gelatin pudding containing bits of fruits suspended in it.

  • Nervous tissue

Nervous tissue senses stimulus and helps in processing and transmission of information. It contains two main types of cells called nerve cells and glia. Like the electrical circuits, here, neuron helps in transmission of signals from nerves to the spinal cord and brain. Glia basically acts to support the neuronal function.
