Merchant Navy is all about the transport of goods from one place to another. It makes an important part of the world economy. About 90% of all the goods that are transported in the world are shipped. So there is quite a huge amount of money, time and man power that makes this possible. If you are part of the Merchant Navy and working on the ship as a Navigating or Marine Officer, you are expected to work for 4-6 months. However, the remuneration is high and the vacation days go up to 2-3 months.
Pre-Sea Training ? Eligible individuals can opt for a 1-year training program in an offshore university. The cost for this can be anything between 2-3 lacs.
Onboard training and Examination ? After the training period has been completed the individual must complete another 6 months of apprenticeship after which the candidate can take a clearance test from the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India.
Further progression ? For a further progression in the career, the candidate must keep giving a competency exam at every stage.
Different posts require different skill-sets. However most of them i.e., Navigating Officer and Marine Engineer require a few common requirements.

Normally a compulsive 4-year long Undergraduate Program after which you get a Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency that is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping is chosesn by most candidates.
