A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases or injuries based on imaging techniques like x-rays, CT, MRI, PET, and ultrasound imaging. Thus there are two branches of radiology diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology.
Radiologists master the technique of non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures such as endovascular removal of aneurysms and tumors, percutaneous biopsies, and pinpoint radiation therapies.
They are medical doctors with equivalent importance. Exposure to radiation can cause harm to the patient and can be lethal in some cases. Thus, radiologists undertake an additional four years of post-medical training in radiation safety, procedures, and interpretation. Here the subjects they learn are: Radiation safety/protection, radiation effects on the human body Understanding performance and interpretation of quality radio imagery, etc.
One can take a subspecialty of radiology, in Breast-imaging, Diagnostic radiology, Cardiovascular radiologist, Radiation oncology, Gastrointestinal Radiology, Nuclear radiology, Neuro-radiology or Pediatric radiology.
The need for educated and professional radiologists is ever increasing in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers. The field of radiography continues to grow with an increase in technological advancements.
After completing your degree in this field one can become a Radiologist (MD), Radiology Technologists often called Radiographer, a technician for radiological machinery and equipment, Sonographer, MRI or CT or PET or CAT Scan Technologist, etc. One can be a part of the industrial sector where manufacturing and research on radiological equipment are conducted.
The Bachelor?s Course in radiology is of three years B.Sc in Radiography and Master?s Course is of two years (Post Graduate Diploma in Radiotherapy Technology or Post Graduate Diploma in Radio-diagnosis and Imaging Sciences or Post Graduate Diploma in X-ray Radiography and Ultra-sonography)
