Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Our Bapu was often referred to as the Father of Our Nation, was a revolutionary figure head of our history, played a key role in not only propelling the Indian Freedom Struggle to be freed from the clutches of British Colonialism but also helped to propagate many of the values of peace and nationalism that we still follow to this date. Through his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth, the reader will be provided with an in-depth understanding of the motivations that Gandhiji worked with and his understanding of the atrocities that had been taking place in India at that time. On his 150th birthday, it is worth noting that even decades after his death in 1948, his policies and teachings continue to inspire the Indian population in a constructively nationalist manner.
One such brainchild born from the wish to honor the sacrifice and contribution Gandhiji had made in order to attain national freedom while maintaining advocacy of non-violence, is the Non-Government Organization named Mahatma Gandhi Foundation. Founded in 1983 by the socialist politician and trade unionist of the time Surur Hoda, this organization is currently based in Mumbai, Maharashtra and is headed currently by Mahatma Gandhi?s great-grandson and son of nonviolent activist Arun Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi. In 2006, Tushar Gandhi was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador of CISRI-ISP. The primary purpose of this organization is to utilize Gandhian values such as Ahimsa and Constructive Nationalism in order to address and maybe solve contemporary issues that exist in our society. They work towards rehabilitating those of lower castes who have been alienated and chastised by upper-caste individuals on the basis of the age old custom of untouchability. Abolition of untouchability is also an extremely important covenant of Gandhijis teachings as well. Mahatma Gandhis achievements are not only accepted by Indians, but are also recognized on an international scale and with a hint of irony that one such country is indeed the UK. There is an office in Kingsley Hall Community Center in East London where Gandhiji lived in 1931 called the Gandhi Foundation. This office is essentially a tribute to the great freedom fighter and even Chronicles his work and efforts in order to liberate India from the 400 year colonial rule of the British Empire. Gandhiji?s principle of Ahimsa also inspired the creation of the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace. Mahatma Gandhi?s adversaries had great a respect for him, due to his strong will, ethical manner and genuine compassion for his people. He was and continues to be, even from beyond life, one of the greatest blessings India has known.
