The clock is ticking! Water shortage is a fatal environmental concern and it has taken over 200,000 lives in a year on average. By 2020 Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and others are racing to reach zero groundwater levels. In rural India, people are walking for miles in search of clean drinking water and infants are dying of dehydration.
In times of crisis, we have a revolutionary start-up founded by Swapnil Shrivastava is producing water our of the atmosphere. Moved by the problem of water shortage and poor quality faced in the interiors of the country, Swapnil started researching on finding the most environmentally viable technologies to utilize atmospheric vapour in the generation of water.
At first, he and his partners Venkatesh R and Sandeep Nutakki devised an electricity-based model. This model was not clean as it created chlorofluorocarbons thus, increasing their carbon footprint. In the year 2016, they presented this model at Future Arc Prize 2016 at NIT Calicut.
After a year of research and development, they came up with a panel that can be installed on the rooftop of any house, rural or urban, that attracts water from humidity in the air in the night, uses sunlight through the day to heat it up, and condenses for supplying to the user through pipes.
If we consider the atmospheric water in the form of vapor we have 10 times more water than all the oceans of the world combined! This is definitely enough to produce low cost, non-polluting, clean, potable water for generations to come.
The company is named as Uravu Labs. Their model is still in a prototype stage. Once this technology goes live, this will help a lot of drought-stricken regions to get water from the air.
The only disadvantage for this model as on date is, areas having low humidity may not be very conducive for this model to work. The output will be certainly different.
