However, with the increasing number of vehicles on the roads, in recent years, the numbers of automobile accidents have also risen. There are many technologies that try to prevent motor accidents by predicting them in advance. Let?s go through some of them.

Collision Avoidance System:

It is known by several names such as pre-crash system, forward collision warning system or collision mitigation system. It uses a radar or laser and a camera to detect an imminent crash and sends signals to the car owner. After an obstruction is detected and an impending crash is predicted, it sends a signal to the driver. Even after that if no action is taken, it stops the car autonomously. In USA, around 99% of the car companies agreed to include this system at the behest of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It has many features such as pedestrian detection that highlights people walking during the night and reverse automatic braking that automatically brakes the car to avoid a reverse collision.

Electronic stability control (ESC)

Also known as electronic stability program (ESP) or dynamic stability control (DSC), uses computerised technology to detect and stop skidding and make vehicles safer. After ESC detects a road that is slippery it applies the brakes autonomously without waiting for the driver?s consent. Mercedes-Benz was the first automobile to implement this technology in 1995. SInce then, it has been adopted by many automobile companies and is great for roads where it snows frequently and the roads get too slippery.

Automatic emergency braking (AEB)

It?s a more recently introduced system where the car resorts to automatic braking to avoid a collision in cases where the driver ignores all the signals. So if a car is about to collide into an obstruction and cause an accident, the system will automatically brake to avoid the collision. Though this is a feature found mostly in luxury cars, affordable cars have started implementing it as well. It has a dual role or function. It not only predicts crashes by observing the road and alerting the driver of an imminent crash, but it also reduces the impact of the collision by preparing the vehicle either by resorting to automatic brake or slowing down the speed of the automobile. Most of these systems use radar and camera to detect possible collisions.

Blind spot warning

It is a system that detects vehicles from the rear as well as the backend that cannot be detected using the rear view or front view mirrors. Mostly while taking a turn through a sharp curve we find a blind spot where a vehicle coming from the other side of the road cannot be seen immediately or in cases where you simply cannot see another vehicle due to the curvature of the road. In those cases the blind spot detection detects such vehicles for you and prevents a possible collision.

Most of these technologies have been implemented and used in recent years from around the world. With a 1.4-lakh deaths every year amounting to 24% of the total cause of deaths, India leads the chart for deaths caused by car crashes. If there is ever a time we need better technology to avoid road accidents it is now. India?s first collision avoidance system came with 6th Sense built by Sixth Sensor Technology. However, we need more systems to prevent car crashes.
