Manual Toll Collection

Manual toll collection is most widely used collection method in India. It requires a toll collector or attendant. Based on the vehicle classification, cash toll is received by the collector. The collector, who also dispenses change, may accept and sell scrip, tickets, coupons, making an entry of the vehicle in the system and issuing receipt to the patron.

Due to manual intervention, the processing time is highest

In order to bring down waiting time of motorists at five toll booths that provide entry into and exit from city, cashless ETC tag lanes were introduced over five years ago but the same seems to remain under utilised. More number of motorists should be motivated towards using the same, says a study report prepared by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

ETC tag is a facility wherein a tag is installed on a vehicle and the same tag is detected at the toll booth with the help of censors. The amount is deducted automatically from the prepaid account for which one recharges on a regular basis. This saves time of motorists and prevents traffic jams at toll booths.

This cashless mechanisms of Electronic Toll Collection is a system enabling collection of toll payments electronically with vehicles not having to stop at toll booths.

Electronic tags fitted on vehicles can be read at the toll booth to automate the whole collection process
