What is power shortage?

Power Shortage. A condition that occurs in an electric power system when the total real or reactive power of the power plants in the system is insufficient to supply all consumers with electric power of the required quality.

Problems faced during power shortage

Power failures are particularly critical at sites where the environment and public safety are at risk. Institutions such as hospitals, sewage treatment plants and mines, will usually have backup power sources such as standby generators, which will automatically start up when electrical power is lost. Other critical systems, such as telecommunication, are also required to have emergency power.

Electricity from cars

Using energy stored in the batteries of electric vehicles to power large buildings not only provides electricity for the building, but also increases the lifespan of the vehicle batteries, new research shows.

The concept, called vehicle to grid (V2G), is based on the fact that your car is typically not being used 90 percent of the time. "What if it could work for you while it sits there?" said Jeff Stein from the University of Michigan.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology provides power from electric vehicles (EVs) to the grid in response to peak load demands. Depending on the demand an EV could charge or discharge power; therefore, EVs can be seen as moving storage devices.

Of course the car has to plug into a socket, so that electricity can flow both into and back out of the battery. Renting out electrical storage in this way could make electric vehicles more affordable, while also removing the need for backup electricity generators. By charging up a car at night when there is more capacity for electrical supply and then using that electricity as the daytime power source for a household, the system helps alleviate consumption of power in peak periods when demand is highest.

Further, it can also be leveraged as backup power supply for emergencies.

Technology Functionality

Household power can be supplied from a car using lithium-ion battery by installing a PCS (Power Control System) connected to the household?s distribution board, while plugged into the car DC quick charge port. Further, through the PCS, vehicle can also be charged from the household power supply.

though this system is yet evolving, this can serve as a permanent solution to power shortage and emergencies.
