The Advent of technology and globalized connectivity, the average human life has been made infinitely more convenient than it was a century ago. From communication, information, entertainment and even payment, every virtual requirement of an individual today has been streamlined to fit an application on a hand held cell phone. However, while the benefits are indisputable, it is also important to remember maintenance of the cleanliness of a phone is essential so as to prevent possible diseases that may attack a person.

Researchers, on studying a cellphone, found that there had been over 7000 kinds of bacteria that had been found on its surface. A cellphone screen, due to the various environments it has been exposed to is often considered to be a breeding ground for a plethora of different microbial beings including dangerous bacteria and viruses such as Influenza and Coli. These microbes can often be responsible for diseases such as toxic shock syndrome, pneumonia and so on.

The average person checks their phone at least 80 times a day. This means that our phones accompany us to all the environments we visit and are in close proximity to our hands at all given points of time. Due to a common lack of awareness to where we put our hands and how long it has been since we have last washed them may lead to the owners of the phones themselves infecting the phone with the germs on their hands. This, compounded with the heat of the phone battery and the closed damp places commonly used to store phones like pockets and purses create the perfect warm, dark and damp environment to allow microbes to grow and multiply. This renders timely hand-washing essentially useless due to the fact that we touch our phones after the exercise, thus dirtying our hands again.

A method to maintain a germ-free phone, a solution of 60% water and 40% isopropyl alcohol or a mixture of distilled water and white vinegar. However, these methods are not 100% effective. It is with this thought that it had been ascertained that UV Germicidal lamps are 100% effective. In these lamps, mercury and argon are filled artificially so that it produces radiations in the UV Spectrum when electricity is passed through it, and these UV Rays are used to eradicate harmful bacteria. This technology may be used to produce surface cleaning machines in order to provide safe and effective cleaning machines.
