The Indian road network is over 5,603,293kms, on 31st March 2016. India ranks 2nd on the world as largest road network, after the USA. The road network comprises of national highways, expressways, state highways, major district, and village roads. Though India ranks 2nd in the world for the roads, the quality of the roads differs. Usually, highways are well taken care of, but city roads are filled with potholes causing 3,597 people to die and 25,000 injured, in the year 2107.
The use of plastic has slowly become an integral part of all daily human requirements, for day to day life. Everyday plastic material consists of plastic carry bags, packing material, bottles, cups, and various electronic items have slowly replaced everything made of other material due to plastic?s property. Plastic is durable, easy to produce, lightweight, unbreakable, odourless, and colourless. The main reason why plastic is seen as a disadvantage is that plastic doesn?t decompose. Plastic waste is seen everywhere around the country and has caused many serious problems. Plastic waste clogs drain, causing floods. Animals while grass grazing chokes on plastic bags and other plastic material.
The whole process is simple. The plastic waste material is first shredded to a particular size using a shredded machine. The mixture is then heated at 165-degree c. And then transferred to the mixing chamber, and the bitumen is heated to 160-degree c to result in a good binding. It is essential to monitor the temperature during the whole heating process. The shredded plastic waste is then added to the mixture. It gets coated uniformly over the aggregate within 30 to 60 seconds, giving an oily look. The plastic waste coated aggregate is mixed with hot bitumen, and the mixture results are used for road construction. The road laying temperature is between 110-degree c to 120 degrees c.
Plastic waste helps increase the strength of the road, reducing rad fatigue. These roads have higher resistance towards rainwater and cold water. Since a large amount of plastic waste is used for such a small stretch of road, the amount of waste plastic strewn around will reduce. Plastic roads resolve a problem linked to plastic waste management and treatment that take centuries to break down, pile up our landfills, or pollute our oceans. The new use of plastic will help to reduce the mass of the waste considerably.
