A smart-solar irrigation system (SMIS) is apt for moving towards sustainable growth in the development of agriculture. However, we have a long way to go before it can be fully implemented.

So what is SMIS?

A smart-solar irrigation system uses of solar energy to distribute water uniformly in agricultural lands. The water pumps are installed with solar panels that convert solar energy to electrical energy during the day when light falls on them. This is helpful as many rural areas of the country still do not have access to electricity. Also, petrol and diesel are expensive. Once these solar panels have been installed, there are no further costs involved in its running. Though, these panels are costly, many companies are trying to come up with cheaper alternatives.

A Farmer?s Woes

There are many problems that farmers are facing today. Chief amongst them is irrigation. Today, water pumps mostly run on either electricity or diesel and petrol and that tends to increase the cost of farming with the increasing fuel rates, not to mention added dependence on fossil fuels. If this system can be placed in our farmlands, it has the potential to increase the crop yield by almost 300%. Also, solar panels work effortlessly, they do not need much of maintenance and they are cost-effective.

As agriculture is a major source of income for about 40% of the population around the world, and 50% in India, people from all over the globe are trying to find better solutions to save costs as well as reduce energy consumption. So, to sum it up, solar panels are a healthier option both for farmers as well as the environment.

A Distressed Environment

Our environment has been suffering the effects of pollution, global warming mass extinction to name a few problems. However, the biggest one comes from increasing dependence on fossil fuels. Not only are we depleting our reserves, but we are also polluting our environment by increasing carbon emissions that come from using petrol, diesel and natural gases. The only things left to do are increase awareness and try to build better systems. SMIS is one of the many ways we can contribute to our environment.
