Banana stems are high in fiber which aid in the treatment of ulcers or an acidic stomach. Banana stems are also very high in potassium and vitamin B6, which together benefit the muscles and the body's production of haemoglobin and insulin.
A biodegradable filter cartridge for treating wastewater, comprises of elongate supportive member and a polymeric fibrous mass made from banana stem mounted on a porous cylindrical pot forming having pores, which functions as sub-micron particles retainer to remove impurities from said wastewater when said wastewater passes through said polymeric fibrous mass layer under positive pressure, pure water is obtained.
According to Wina3 and Dhalikaet al.4, banana stems under fresh conditions include 3.3-8.1% crude fat, 13.40-31.70% crude fiber, 31.60-53.00% extract materials without nitrogen and 18.40-24.00% ash.
The banana plant is the largest herbaceous flowering plant. Banana plants are often mistaken for trees. Bananas have a false stem (called pseudo stem), which is made by the lower part of the leaves. A pseudo stem is able to produce a single bunch of bananas Heavy metal (i.e. lead (Pb)) is one of the environmental issues recently due to its danger for human health. Therefore the removal ofwaste and impurities from water is important. One of the prospective methods to remove Pb is membrane biofilter. Here, the purpose of this study was to prepare the membrane biofilter for Pb removal process. In this study, membrane biofilter was produced from banana stem. Banana stem was selected because it is abundantly available in India. Three steps of experiments were conducted. First preparation of microbial cellulose using Acetobacterxylinum using banana stems for a main source, secondly Synthesis of cellulose acetate and thirdly preparation of biomembrane from obtained cellulose acetate. To produce membrane biofilter, the cellulose acetate was dissolved into dichloromethane to form a dope solution. Then, the doped solution was printed in Petri dish. Some biomembrane properties were characterized for identification, i.e. infrared spectra, electron microscope, and elemental analysis. Experimental results showed that we succeeded to prepare biomembrane with a pore size of 5 ?m. The filtration efficiency of membrane was 93.7% of Pb when using Pb with a concentration of 10 ppm.
To increase the mechanical properties of the composite, technical textiles can be used as reinforcement, instead of short fibers. To do so, fibers must be spun and woven. The aim of this paper is to show the viability of using banana fibers to obtain a yarn suitable to be woven, after an enzymatic treatment, which is more environmentally friendly
