I?d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don?t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that. ? Thomas A. Edison
Imagine a life without electricity. Having to struggle with lamps and candles or studying under street lights. Well, that?s a normal day in a million households across India even today. According to the International Energy Agency, nearly 240 million Indians lacked lack access to electricity in 2017.
One out of every five people around the world without access to power lives in India. These numbers speak volumes about how scarce this source of energy is. But what if this crisis can be fixed with minimal efforts? The answer my friends is SOLAR ENERGY.
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants, and artificial photosynthesis.
It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power, and solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light-dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.
The large magnitude of solar energy available makes it a highly appealing source of electricity. The United Nations Development Programme in its 2000 World Energy Assessment found that the annual potential of solar energy was 1,575?49,837 exajoules (EJ). This is several times larger than the total world energy consumption, which was 559.8 EJ in 2012.
To generate solar energy, the photons radiated from the sun to earth must be collected, converted into a usable format and then delivered to an electronic device or the electric grid. Arrays of photovoltaic cells are normally used to collect the energy from the sun and convert it into electricity.
Solar panels are used extensively to generate electricity. These Photovoltaic solar panels absorb sunlight as a source of energy to generate direct current electricity. A photovoltaic (PV) module is a packaged, connected assembly of photovoltaic solar cells available in different voltages and wattages. Photovoltaic modules constitute the photovoltaic array of a photovoltaic system that generates and supplies solar electricity in commercial and residential applications. But the problem with these solar panels is that sometimes they fall under the shade and fail to absorb the sunrays to convert it into electricity. Thus, a group of students from Gujarat has come up with a model solution for this problem i.e. SOLAR TRACKER.
This device can be called as a smarter version of solar panels. It is a big leap in the solar industry. These trackers are designed to track sunlight so that the panel moves towards the direction of the sun for the process of electricity generation.
