India today is looking at one of the worst water crises that the nation has ever endured. Places like Chennai and Bengaluru especially have seen a reduction of rainfall by 36 percent from the 50-year average. This has been propounded to be due to a lack of rainfall as seen through the droughts that have affected the agricultural sector significantly and also a lack of proper water management. It is for this reason that Indians should be looking at innovative methods of water conservation in order to preserve our already limited water resources. One such innovative technique is the groundwater recharge system.

The groundwater recharge system involves the redirection water from flowing through drains and rivers into the sea in order to replenish the groundwater. It utilizes bunds and lakes that have been made in the neighborhood in order to hold the rain water through the absorption of the same by the soil in the ground. This allows the water to be a part of the soil and will be used by the plants that have been cultivated in the soil. The soil will be held together with the water retention through their far reaching roots. This method thus allows water to be stored as groundwater and in turn raise the water, providing for steady progressing in replenishing our nation?s water resources.

This method is particularly beneficial due to the fact that not only it is completely natural and organic process of conservation, but aids not one, but two of the issues faced by the farming fraternity of India. This method, similar to drip wells, can be used as a means of irrigation as well and provides for an environmentally mindful, more economic option that not only provides for water conservative methods as opposed to more primitive methods like furrows, but also one that raises the groundwater of the country.

Given the fact that our water resources have depleted to significant level, leading to the crises that are currently taking in places such as Bengaluru and Chennai, this model can be an important step that all the citizens of India can take part in order to ensure that the generations that are to come after us do not suffer due to our indiscriminant and excessive use of the world?s natural resources and provide for the sustainable development of not only our nation, but the World as a whole.
