Seventy-one years back, India gained Independence on August 15, 1947, from the clutches of the Britishers.

Sixty-eight years back, on November 26th, the constituent assembly adopted the Indian constitution. The preamble of the Indian constitution bears significance to the Republic of India and is also of great historical significance. The Indian constitution is the supreme law of the country and speaks in length about the principles, powers, and duties of the people of India and its governance.

The Indian constitution was only partially adopted on November 26th. Two months later, the constitution was completely adopted on January 26th,1950. However, November 26th is officially considered as the National Law day.

It was in 1979 that noted jurist and former parliamentarian LM Singhvi proposed in the supreme court bar that the National Law Day should be celebrated on November 26th to mark the adoption of our constitution. The National Law Day was celebrated thereafter till 2015.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, insisted in 2015 that this day should be celebrated as Constitution Day in the fond memory of Dr. BR Ambedkar. The year was of great significance to mark the celebration of this day, as it was the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, who approved the constitution drafted by the assembly. This day is also called as Samvidhan Diwas.

This day is celebrated to applaud the makers of the Constitution and to make the citizens understand the importance of the constitution. It is not announced as a public holiday, but various departments of the Government celebrated this day back then. Schools and colleges read the preamble of the constitution on this day, says the Department of Education and Literacy.

There are online and offline quizzes that are arranged based on the subject of the Indian constitution to help encourage students to appreciate the constitution and its significance. Various colleges and higher schools also arrange for mock parliamentary debate.
