In the 11th biggest city in Maharashtra and 49th most populous city in India, a teacher has gained popularity and for a good reason.
Meet Ranjitsinh Disale, a 32-year-old teacher from Solapur in Maharashtra.
He has made it to the top 10 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize 2020.
Once an engineer, now a teacher Ranjitsinh teaches at the Zilla Parishad Primary School in Paritewadi village of Solapur.
He decided to explore the teaching career in 2009 following a suggestion made by his father.
In 2010, he attended a teaching workshop by Microsoft organized by the State Council for Educational Research and Training.
During this training, Ranjitsinh met Microsoft?s Innovative Teachers from around the world.
This school had been experiencing a high dropout rate in their school for a while.
Ranjitsinh took up this challenge and turned around the situation. This successful initiative caught the eyes of many, and he has now made his way to the top 10 finalists.
This year there were 12,000 entries from 140 countries.
The winner of this competition will be announced in December.
Ranjitsinh Disale has made a QR code for girls.
With the help of this QR code, girls who are forced to skip school are encouraged to keep pursuing their education.
As a girl?s education is not given much importance, in villages, they are forced to stay at home and take care of younger siblings and participate in the house chores.
Ranjitsinh records his classes and uploads them on the drive.
The QR codes are stuck beside the relevant topic.
The girl students could scan the QR code and learn the topic at their convenience.
Ranjitsinh only translated the textbooks in the local language of the students.
Through this QR code, the girl students could access video lectures, audio poems, stories and assignments.
Though this was initially designed for girl students, anyone with access to the QR code can access the lectures.
Ranjitsinh believed that if the students could keep up with what is taught in class, the chances of them returning to school is high.
He saw an immediate result when he implemented this initiative in 2014.
In 2015, Ranjitsingh was shortlisted as one of the 300 Microsoft?s Innovative Teachers from around the globe.
The girl students started appearing for exams and scored good marks as well.
As the girls did better in their exams and became confident, the attendance in the class improved.
This project by Ranjitsinh was such a success, and 300 schools in Solapur quickly adopted this initiative.
The state government implemented this widely popular initiative to all classes in the 2017-18 academic year.
Every child has the right to education.
On 11th September 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared 11th November as ?National Education Day.?
The Right to Education Act was passed shortly after by the government in 2009.
This initiative by Ranjitsingh Disale earned him popularity and was adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to implement it across the country.
