The current scenario in the world is such that disasters keep happening all around the world. They have been increasing dramatically over the past few decades, with climate change contributing to even more extreme or unpredictable weather. Disasters not only affect the countries but also people?s livelihood. To put control over the same, the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction day was started.
The International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction began in 1989, after United Nations General Assembly decided to dedicate a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. This day is held on October 13 every year. This day was started as an encouragement for every citizen and the government so that they can take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.
In 2002, a further resolution was passed by the general assembly to maintain an annual observance as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including prevention, migration and preparedness. The 2019 edition of the Natural Disaster Reduction continues as a part of the "Sendai Seven" campaign, which is centred on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework. The Sendai Framework is a 15 year, volunteer, non- binding agreement which recognizes the state?s primary role to reduce disaster risk. This year the focus will be on Target (d) of the Sendai Framework, which also focuses on reducing disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services.
