They are representations of the beliefs, traditions and lifestyles. Cultural heritage encompasses the natural environment, human built environment and artefacts. To collectively celebrate the cultural history and heritage, 18th April was declared as World Heritage Day by the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982.
World Heritage Day is also known as ?The International Day for Monuments and Sites.? It is an annual event and is celebrated worldwide with the aim to raise awareness about preserving the heritage and recognizing the rich culture enveloped in the monuments and sites. The authorities also invest in preserving the monuments, buildings and artefacts which are handled by experts to preserve them for future generations. For every country its heritage is an asset. This asset is significant of a particular time in history and some even speak volumes of what the country has endured through the remains.
The cultural significance not only allures travelers from across the world but also speaks of the movements, laws and social change that contributed to its richness. While visiting a city is always a preferred option to relive the remarkable past. One can get a hold of the stories through books, documentaries and travel videos. YouTube and travel television channels cover the history and culture of the place and the heroic tales of the heroes who once lived there.
The theme for World Heritage Day for the year 2020 is ?Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility.? It is an important expression for global unity given the current health crisis. The theme recognizes that heritage is frequently connected with and valued by many diverse groups and communities. It is concerned with the relationships between cultures and their collective responsibility to safeguard notable attributes, meanings and values of heritage.
The term ?shared? is significantly crucial. Cultures and societies have shared practices and ways of doing things. However, certain beliefs have been forced upon people. Other cultures may have guarded knowledge but not shared. Some others may have gone the length to even destroy heritage for what they represent. Hence, the word ?shared? is specially triggering when used in this year?s theme. It seeks to do away with the old hindering way of thinking.
The World Wide Web connects everyone irrespective of where you are in the world. All you need is a medium such as a smart phone/laptop/desktop/tablet and internet connectivity. You can be a part of a global event in the following ways:
? Post photos of shared cultures and heritage in your country. And include short videos (under 30 seconds). Include descriptions, facts and quotes to accompany any image or hashtags. Share virtual tours and videos of heritage with credits and disclaimers.

UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations and has come into force on November 04, 1946. It is headquartered in Paris, France. The agency was made for the promotion of international collaboration in science, education and culture. It seeks to build peace by collaborating in the above sections of the society. There are 38 UNESCO world heritage sites in India, out of which 30 are cultural, 7 are natural and 1 is mixed in India till now.
? Presentations: Makes chits about the various heritage sites and ask students to pick a chit. Ensure there are no duplications. Then the students can make presentations about the heritage site mentioned on the chit. Every week 2-3 students can make a presentation using charts and pictures.
? Quiz competitions: A quiz competition can be held where questions about various cultural heritages can be asked. The team with the highest score wins.
? Make cue cards: The students in the class can be assigned one cultural heritage. On an A4 size paper or a piece of chart paper the student will need to stick a picture and will have to describe the heritage with 5 most relevant facts. This can then be displayed on the notice board outside the classrooms for everyone else to learn about it.
? Match the following: Pictures of the cultural heritage can be displayed on the left side while the name can be displayed on the right in a random order. The students will need to match the picture with the correct name.
? Project competition: Students can build a model of the heritage they choose with the help of waste products or biodegradable products. And the top 3 can be awarded accordingly.
