Hey guys!
Let?s learn about the significance of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
Two for the price of one, how did this happen?
The purpose of WTISD is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies. It aims to bridge the digital divide. The origins of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day date back to the signing of the First International Telegraph Convention on 17 May 1865, which marked the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society was called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day to focus on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the Information Society raised.
The long name for this day marks the merger of two nearly-identical official days in 2006 by the United Nations. One of the two days, World Telecommunication Day, was celebrated every May 17 since 1969. It marked the founding of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17, 1865. In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to celebrate both events on 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Its purpose was to focus on the importance of many issues in the area of information and communication technologies.
This day annually celebrated by organizing appropriate national programmes with a view to:
? stimulating reflection and exchanges of ideas on the theme adopted by the Council.
? Debating the various aspects of the theme with all partners in society.
? Formulating a report reflecting national discussions on the issues underlying the theme, to be fed back to ITU and the rest of its membership
The theme is ?Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)??.
The year 2020 represents a unique opportunity for ITU membership to commemorate ICT?s contribution to the advancement of the Information Society and to present the ?Connect 2030 Agenda for Global Telecommunication/ICT Development? now linked to the Strategic Plan of the Union for the period 2020-2023. With a focus on how technological advances in the coming 10 years will contribute to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The theme will allow ITU membership to reflect on the ICT advances for transition to smart and sustainable development. It will focus on specific ICT-enabled solutions and emerging trends for fostering economic, environmental and social sustainability, contributing to the five strategic goals of the Connect 2030 Agenda namely growth, inclusiveness, sustainability, innovation and partnership which contribute to:
? Strengthening the role of ICTs to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
? Raising awareness of the importance of connectivity, as well as specific ICT-enabled solutions and emerging trends for fostering economic, environmental and social sustainability.
? Increasing the usage of ICTs, including a view from the demand side.
? Reducing the Digital Divide between countries and within countries, taking also into consideration the need to reduce the Digital Gender Divide.
? Enhancing collaboration by sharing the experiences in implementing the ?Connect 2030 Agenda? to reflect on the ICTs advances for transition to smart and sustainable development.
? Highlighting the work of the ICT sector by inviting the ITU membership (including ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, SMEs and Academia) to celebrate this day by adopting the Connect 2030. Agenda and considering achieving its goals in their daily activities.
? Arrange a video call with your buddies using social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp or even Zoom and have a quiz about the evolutions of communication over the years.
? Schedule a trivia time on 17th May and share information about how communication mediums have helped us connect especially at a time when social distancing has to be maintained.
? Share information about your day, for instance, what does your day look like? How do you keep productive? And so on
? Arrange webinars where your teachers and principals can address the students and share important information that can help everyone.
? Post the activities, you are developing to achieve the Connect 2030 Agenda Goals in the WTISD webpage.
? Share links of all the activities you?ve engaged in on Twitter with relevant hashtags.
? Use technology to have a live dance competition, singing competition or simply play an instrument. Have fun while you communicate with the help of technology.
? Make a call to your buddies and speak your heart put. Connect to express any difficulties you are facing and brainstorm to come up with solutions.
